Bucksport Access Road

Overview

A.O. Hardee partnered with the Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority to construct a 2.53-mile access road connecting SC 701 to Bucksport Road in Horry County, South Carolina. The scope of work included clearing 22 acres, extensive earthwork, installation of storm drainage systems, and full roadway construction. A key feature of the project was an 870-foot bridge built with cast-in-place (CIP) concrete piles and a CIP bridge deck, complemented by Keystone retaining walls, guardrail, asphalt paving, and roadway striping.

Challenges

The project required managing significant volumes of earthwork, including over 50,000 cubic yards of cut-to-fill and 19,000 cubic yards of borrow material. Constructing the long-span bridge over challenging terrain, while maintaining environmental compliance and ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding area, posed logistical and engineering complexities.

Solution

A.O. Hardee employed a strategic approach to earth balancing, efficient material sourcing, and precise grading to manage site elevations and drainage. The team installed 6,950 linear feet of prestressed concrete piles to support the bridge structure, followed by 851 linear feet of cast-in-place bridge deck. Over 1,500 linear feet of storm drain infrastructure was installed to handle runoff, and 6,600 tons of asphalt were placed for the final roadway surface. Guardrails and striping were added to ensure roadway safety.

Result

The Bucksport Access Road was successfully completed, delivering a vital connection between SC 701 and Bucksport Road. The new infrastructure enhances regional access, supports economic development, and improves transportation reliability in the area. A.O. Hardee delivered the project on time and with a strong emphasis on quality and safety, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted civil contractor in South Carolina.
