NMB Beach Renourishment

Overview

As part of a broader coastal resilience initiative, A.O. Hardee & Son, Inc. partnered with the City of North Myrtle Beach to restore and enhance the city’s protective dune systems. The project was strategically executed in conjunction with the Tidewater Spoil Basin Emergency Clean-Out, enabling the efficient reuse of approximately 40,000 cubic yards of compatible spoil material as dune fill. By leveraging nearby dredged material, the project reduced environmental impact and cost while advancing the city’s long-term shoreline protection goals.

Challenges

This project demanded precise coordination to balance environmental stewardship with operational efficiency. Transporting large volumes of spoil material to designated beach zones required carefully controlled flagging and hauling operations to ensure community safety and minimize disruptions. Dump trucks were systematically backed down designated access points, offloading material for temporary beach stockpiling. To further complicate logistics, crews had to manage reloading and redistributing the material using a combination of on-road and off-road trucks, all while maintaining strict traffic control and compliance with safety standards.

Solution

A.O. Hardee deployed a robust fleet of dump trucks, off-road trucks, dozers, and track hoes to handle material placement with accuracy and care. Spoil material was initially staged at beach access points, then moved to specific dune restoration segments where dozers and track hoes reshaped the dunes to precise alignment and elevations. This approach ensured the restored dunes seamlessly integrated with the natural shoreline, enhancing the city’s defenses against storms and erosion.

Key features of the solution included the strategic reuse of spoil material from nearby dredging operations, efficient truck routing and flagging for safe hauling, and the use of specialized equipment for final contouring. These measures collectively delivered a resilient and sustainable dune system.

Result

Through the City of North Myrtle Beach Dune Restoration Project, A.O. Hardee & Son, Inc. reinforced the community’s coastal protection and storm resilience. By executing both the spoil basin clean-out and dune restoration simultaneously, the team demonstrated a commitment to sustainable infrastructure, environmental responsibility, and community-focused delivery. The revitalized dunes now stand as a vital natural barrier, preserving the city’s cherished beachfront and supporting its continued prosperity.
