In partnership with SCDOT and PCL Civil, A.O. Hardee played a key role in a major Design-Build infrastructure project to replace three aging bridges along US Route 701. Spanning Yauhannah Lake, the Great Pee Dee River, and the Great Pee Dee Overflow, the new 0.85 miles of bridge and 1.9 miles of roadway were constructed adjacent to the existing alignment in Georgetown and Horry Counties, South Carolina. A.O. Hardee provided critical design input and led the execution of complex civil construction elements.
The project involved extensive coordination in a sensitive ecological corridor, including demolition of existing infrastructure, traffic control along an active highway, and construction within a floodplain. Over 497,000 cubic yards of borrow material were required, along with significant temporary shoring and erosion control measures. The team also had to maintain access for recreational users through the addition of new dual boat ramps and a courtesy dock.
A.O. Hardee cleared 20 acres and managed nearly 23,000 cubic yards of unclassified excavation, incorporating geogrid reinforcement across 88,800 square yards and constructing over 4,000 square feet of temporary shoring walls. The team placed 70,539 cubic yards of granular bridge lift material and 9,445 tons of asphalt. Cement-stabilized and aggregate base courses were laid across the roadbed, with over 5,000 linear feet of guardrail installed for safety. Additional amenities included the installation of dual boat ramps and a new courtesy dock to serve the local community.
The US Route 701 bridge replacements were completed successfully, improving transportation safety, capacity, and resilience across a key regional corridor. A.O. Hardee’s contributions—from design collaboration to precision execution—helped deliver a high-quality, long-lasting infrastructure solution that serves both motorists and recreational users in coastal South Carolina.
