A.O. Hardee & Son, Inc. successfully completed a critical emergency clean-out and dredging project at the Tidewater Spoil Basin in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The project involved the excavation of approximately 90,000 to 100,000 cubic yards of accumulated sediment and spoil material to restore the basin’s drainage capacity and maintain long-term operational performance. By strategically coordinating with the City of North Myrtle Beach, the team ensured that a portion of the excavated material was repurposed to enhance nearby dune systems under a separate contract, maximizing both environmental and economic benefits.
Executing this project required meticulous planning and coordination to handle large volumes of material within a sensitive coastal area. Managing the dewatering process and transportation logistics for roughly 100,000 cubic yards of spoil demanded specialized equipment and careful environmental controls. In addition, running the Tidewater Spoil Basin clean-out in parallel with the adjacent Dune Restoration Project added complexity, as the team needed to synchronize excavation, material handling, and haul routes to ensure seamless integration and minimal community disruption.
Solution
A.O. Hardee deployed a full range of specialized equipment—including track hoes, long-reach excavators, dozers, and off-road trucks—to efficiently excavate and manage the spoil material. Approximately 40,000 cubic yards were strategically repurposed as dune fill for the City of North Myrtle Beach Dune Restoration Project, supporting coastal resilience while reducing waste and haul-off costs. The remaining 50,000 to 60,000 cubic yards were dewatered and responsibly transported off-site in compliance with all environmental regulations. Throughout the operation, the team maintained close collaboration with city officials, coordinated access routes, and implemented measures to protect surrounding areas.
The Tidewater Spoil Basin Emergency Clean-Out & Dredging Project restored vital drainage capacity and operational efficiency for the city’s coastal infrastructure while reinforcing nearby dune systems through innovative material reuse. By successfully managing two interrelated projects simultaneously, A.O. Hardee & Son, Inc. demonstrated its expertise in environmentally responsible solutions and its commitment to delivering community-focused infrastructure improvements on time and to the highest standard.
